Somewhat Frequently Asked Question: Why John Gruber Hates Paul Thurrott?

I saw this particular question and laughed a little bit:

why did john gruber hate thurott

I do not think that John Gruber hates Paul Thurrott. I do get the sense that Gruber is irritated by Thurrott’s statements. Many times Gruber points out the inconsistencies in what Thurrott’s been saying, as often as Thurrott contradicts himself.

John Gruber is known as an Apple enthusiast and he is not denying it.

Paul Thurrott tries telling people that he is a tech enthusiasts but his actions say that he is a Microsoft employee.

Leo Laporte is in denial for calling Thurrott as impartial journalist. It is like Becky Worley saying that Rob Enderle is well-respected in the Tech News Industry.

  1. There is a reason why people want to know why Gruber hates Thurrot.

Thurrot wrote an article about how apple can improve the next version of the ipad. Gruber ignored the all of the content of the article and called Thurrot a ‘Dick’.

Someone who thought might Thurrott was wrong and wanted to convice others of that might have written a response refuting Thurrott’s points, or raised their own opinions.

Instead, Gruber made fun of the title of Thurrott’s article and call him a ‘Dick’.

    1. How do you know that Gruber “ignored” all the content of the article?
I read that article, if you can call it an article, Thurrott contradicts himself numerous times, most notable is about pricing. Back in January 2010 shortly after the pricing was revealed, Thurrott said that the pricing was right. Thurrott also wrote: “While Apple clearly intended to include dual cameras in the current iPad.” There is no way in the world that Thurrott is allowed to say that with certainty. He doesn’t have any credible source within Apple as opposed to Microsoft.

I do not take Thurrott seriously because I can not. Taking Paul Thurrott seriously in the tech world is like taking Carlos Mencia seriously in the Comedy world.

John Gruber is abrasive but informative and entertaining at the same time. I really hate using the term “fanboy” to describe anything, but for lack of better term, John Gruber is an Apple fanboy. He’s not denying it.

Paul Thurrott is denying that he’s a Microsoft worshipper, but his action speaks otherwise.

  2. “How do you know that Gruber “ignored” all the content of the article?”

Because he didn’t mention any of the content of the article in his post calling Thurrott a ‘dick’.

“There is no way in the world that Thurrott is allowed to say that with certainty. He doesn’t have any credible source within Apple as opposed to Microsoft.”

Allowed? Pretty sure he can say whatever he wants. After all, Gruber is allowed to call someone a ‘dick’ for not liking a tablet pc as much as him. I didn’t know you knew who all of Thurrott’s sources are.

“Paul Thurrott is denying that he’s a Microsoft worshipper, but his action speaks otherwise.”

So where does Paul his who he is. He calls his website the Winsupersite. The name of his podcast is Windows Weekly..doesn’t seem deceptive to me.

If you are saying he doesn’t view non Microsoft products objectively how do you explain him positively reviewing, and using, the Iphone for the past 4 years. Or the even more glowing reviews of the ipod touch, which he has bought for his kids. So is he not objective when he gives an apple product a negative review,
but he is when its a positive one?

    1. Paul Thurrott is a Dentite.

Read his reviews about non-Microsoft products. Then compare it to Microsoft’s competing products. He’s always giving back-handed complements to anything non-Microsoft.

Just because he is using any non-Microsoft Products, doesn’t mean he’s automatically being objective.

Read and listen to what he said about Windows Vista. He knew that Windows Vista was horrible since the Beta days. Sure he slammed Windows Vista during the early Betas, then he gave a glowing review when it was released. Two years after Windows Vista was released he was screaming and yelling at people for not using Windows Vista due to bad perceptions. Guess what, Windows 7 is the proof. Now you could hear Thurrott backpedaled in Windows Weekly.

All the self-contradictions and backpedalling make Thurrott a credible tech-journalist just like Carlos Mencia as a funny comedian.

  3. Two quick points.

First, again, where has Paul ever said he isn’t a windows guy?

Second, you raise some interesting points…then you say, “All the self-contradictions and backpedalling make Thurrott a credible tech-journalist just like Carlos Mencia as a funny comedian.”

Which kinda kills the whole thing. You can make solid points, then follow it up with a sarcastic personal attack. I don’t have any issues with you criticizing what Paul Thurrott says. I just think you and Gruber should leave the personal attacks out of it. If your goal is to convince me you are right, calling someone names isn’t the way to do it.

    1. First and foremost, Paul is a ‘windows guy’, why else would he have a website called ‘Winsupersite’, do a podcast called ‘windows weekly’ and blog about windows/MS since the mid 90’s? His main focus is and always has been on MS products. However, that doesn’t mean he cant use (and then review, and actually LIKE) other non- MS products does it?

You say he always gives back-handed complements to any non-MS products, ive never noticed this. Far from it, when he reviews/uses a product he likes, its very clear he likes it. I’m thinking the Kindle here, which paul loves and is always going on about. Last time i checked, the kindle was made by amazon, not MS….

you say ‘Two years after Windows Vista was released he was screaming and yelling at people for not using Windows Vista due to bad perceptions.’ Did you not think to release why he was ‘ screaming and yelling? perhaps it could be because people weren’t upgrading from XP, an OS that should of be made obsolete yrs ago. And no matter what, VISTA, from a security perspective, was leaps and bounds better than XP.

Anyway, i agree with TIm, if you dont like what Paul writes, thats fine. If you want to explain why you dont like what he writes, thats also fine. However with the personnel attacks, it comes across to the public that its a case of not liking Paul because he’s a windows guy, and somehow that gives him no right to be critical of any non-MS product, which is rubbish. If you use a product, and use it for a while, that qualifies you to have an opinion on it, good or bad.
